FLOW · DECODED
When the index stops, the internals move.
Opening
Into June, semiconductor stocks rose right up to the day of options expiration. Then they fell the week after. First up, then down — the reverse of what you'd expect.
This issue explains why that order shows up. It's written so anyone trading the US market in Korean can read the flow without re-translating the English coverage. It arrives each Monday, before the open.
The June numbers
| Into Jun 19 expiry | After expiry → Jul 2 | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMH semiconductors | +16.2% | -10.2% | +4.3% |
| NVDA | -4.0% | -7.5% | -11.2% |
| SPY index | +0.5% | -0.2% | +0.3% |
| IWM small caps | +4.6% | +0.7% | +5.3% |
Over that stretch the index barely moved. Only semiconductors swung hard. That gap is this issue's subject.
Why that order shows up
There's a large pool of capital buying the index right now. Products that buy into expiration have grown, and that buying compresses volatility. When volatility is low, options get cheap; when options get cheap, more people buy them, and volatility gets pushed down further. That loop doubles in strength over the summer.
In a volatility-compressed market, the index itself doesn't move much. Instead the insides churn. If something has to go up, something else has to come down. So in this phase what you need to get right is not direction but location — where it's crowded, and where it's empty.
Semiconductors were the crowded side. When lots of people buy calls, someone has to take the other side of that trade, and the hedge behind it turns into stock buying. Prices get pushed higher still. But that buying disappears the moment interest in the calls cools. It didn't need bad news. It only needed interest to stop. That's what happened after expiration passed.
What to watch this week
July 17 is the monthly options expiration. The window from July 20 through July 31 is the stretch when the capital that was tied up during expiry comes free. What happened in semiconductors in June is the freshest case of this.
We'll watch whether the same location repeats. If the read changes, we'll rewrite the case with the reasons attached.
Next issue
Seasonality after the September expiration, and government money flows into the midterms. Both are inputs that can set the direction into year-end.
